JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Nov. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Landstar System, Inc. (Nasdaq: LSTR) -- On November 1, 2002, the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association, Inc. (OOIDA) and six individual owner operators filed a class action in U.S. District Court in Jacksonville, Florida, against Landstar System, Inc. The suit alleges that certain aspects of Landstar motor carriers' leases with owner operators violate the federal leasing regulations. OOIDA seeks injunctive relief, damages, and attorneys' fees.

"I believe that the OOIDA lawsuit is self-serving," said Jeff Crowe, Landstar's Chairman and CEO. "Landstar has a long history of serving the owner operator community. Landstar's business model treats its owner operators fairly and as the true entrepreneurs they are. Landstar doesn't employ any company drivers and uses third party capacity exclusively. As such, all of its programs are designed to benefit such third party capacity and are the benchmark of the industry."

Landstar intends to defend the litigation vigorously.
