JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Landstar System, Inc. (Nasdaq: LSTR), a safety-first non-asset-based provider of transportation capacity, announced today it has once again been named to InformationWeek magazine's annual list of America's most innovative information technology users. This is the fifth consecutive year Landstar has ranked among the publication's "500 Leading Innovative Companies."

For 16 years, InformationWeek has tracked the IT practices of the nation's most innovative organizations. According to the magazine, IT efficiency, corporate-accountability practices, and new business strategies distinguish this year's most innovative companies.

Landstar ranked among the industry leaders in the Logistics and Transportation category. Landstar's 7,700-plus business capacity owners (BCOs) which supply the company with the equipment used to haul freight, along with a nationwide network of nearly 1,000 independent sales agents, use the company's Web site to choose freight, perform administrative functions and make other business decisions. This year Landstar began providing wireless Internet hotspots at various Landstar orientation centers, the company headquarters in Jacksonville, Florida, and the service center in Rockford, Illinois. Landstar provides access to the company's Web site via wireless web-enabled cell phones and other hand-held devices.

"Because our BCOs operate from mobile offices, it's critical that they have access to information from anywhere, all the time," said Landstar President and CEO Henry Gerkens. "Landstar will continue to lead the industry in providing technological support for entrepreneurial transportation capacity owners and sales agents. We're pleased to be recognized by InformationWeek for our ongoing commitment to technology."

"Widespread among the companies on the list this year is the use of business-intelligence tools, content-management software and supply-chain- automation processes," said Stephanie Stahl, editor-in-chief of InformationWeek.

The results of the annual survey are published in the September 20, 2004 issue and on the web at http://www.informationweek.com .
