JACKSONVILLE, Fla., Sept. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Landstar System, Inc., (Nasdaq: LSTR), a safety-first transportation capacity provider, announced today it has once again been named to InformationWeek magazine's annual list of America's most innovative information technology users. Landstar ranked 298 in this year's list of the publication's "500 Leading Innovative Companies." It is the fourth time Landstar has been recognized.

For 15 years, InformationWeek has tracked the IT practices of the nation's most innovative organizations. According to the magazine, companies named to this list, like Landstar, demonstrate patterns of technological, procedural, and organizational innovation. Core areas of operations are examined, including IT budgets, technology deployment, E-business, customer knowledge, infrastructure, and business and technology strategies.

Landstar's 7,400 plus business capacity owners (BCOs) which supply the company with the equipment used to haul freight, along with a nationwide network of nearly 1,000 independent sales agents, use the company's Intranet website to choose freight, perform administrative functions and make other business decisions. Landstar provides access to the company's Intranet via wireless web-enabled cell phones and other hand-held devices.

"Because our BCOs operate from mobile offices, it's critical that they have access to information from anywhere, all the time," said Landstar President and COO Henry Gerkens. "Landstar will continue to lead the industry in providing technological support for entrepreneurial transportation capacity owners and sales agents. We're pleased to be recognized by InformationWeek for our ongoing commitment to technology."

"The InformationWeek 500 are a major force in the U.S. economy," said Stephanie Stahl, editor of InformationWeek. According to the magazine, web- based architecture, productivity-centric tools and products, and IT infrastructure that promotes real-time data transmissions are among the key technology initiatives sought by this year's InformationWeek 500.

This year's study was fielded primarily on the World Wide Web by NOP World's U.S. research unit, RoperNOP. The methodology used to rank the companies was based on a weighted system created by InformationWeek editors and included industry categories from Banking and Financial, to Construction to Retail and Telecommunications. Landstar was ranked among the Logistics and Transportation companies. The results of the annual survey are published in the magazine's September issue and on the web at www.informationweek.com.
